The 2019 list of internships and graduate schemes has now been published here.
Here’s our fabulously useful list of 150 PR internships & graduate schemes for 2018.
How was this list compiled? PR Week’s top 150 agencies 2017 is where we drew the 150 agencies from, we then used the companies’ websites as much as possible to get info on their PR internships and grad schemes. We also contacted all 150 agencies to give them the opportunity to flag any errors and to tell us of any new entry-level roles they may be hiring for. The entries are listed in the same order that PR Week used – they are not ranked by quality of internship/grad scheme.
Not listed by PR Week, as it’s not a PR agency, is the Taylor Bennett Foundation which offers graduate PR traineeships throughout the year for black, Asian and ethnic minority graduates. If you’re a BAME graduate looking to get a foot in the door of the PR industry this is an excellent way to start – over 70% of the Foundation’s alumni now work in communications roles. In summer 2018 it will also be launching a 4 week internship placement programme – keep an eye on its website for details.
The Government Communication Service also runs a diversity internship (to qualify you must hit at least one of three criteria: BAME, socially or economically disadvantaged, or a care leaver. The GCS Internship provides university students from diverse backgrounds, who are interested in communications, the opportunity to work in a range of Whitehall departments and public bodies.
You could find yourself developing and delivering national media campaigns, working on awareness and engagement with some of the most important issues and policies in our society or gathering audience insight for Ministerial offices. Keep an eye on this webpage – applications open later this year.
All the usual advice re job applications apply – do your research (including making sure you know where the agency you’re applying to is located – not all of these listed are in London), write a specific cover letter, make sure you proof read carefully and tell the company what you will do for them, not what they will do for you.
You should read Sarah Stimson’s book, How to get a job in PR, before you apply for anything. It covers CVs and covering letters and the differences between work experience and internships so those chapters are particularly helpful.
All internships and graduate schemes listed were correct on date of publication, 10th January 2018. Details may change as the year goes on (and we don’t update this list once published) so keep an eye on our jobs page for other entry-level opportunities.

Whilst they cannot guarantee that the internship would be extended beyond the set 4 weeks, some of their employees have started out as interns years ago, including one of their Account Directors who is running the scheme, and in 2017 alone they have ended up hiring five of their interns as full-time Junior Account Executives.
They apply a blended approach to their internship, meaning that their interns do get exposure to the different areas of expertise in the agency, from PR to Experiential to Digital, rather than being siloed into one practice for the entire duration of their placement.

• Bespoke in experience to candidates and successful Interns
• Encourages, supports, and mentors Interns to help them develop to their fullest over the three-month internship
• Is realistic and fulfilling – Interns feel they are constantly learning, pushed outside of their comfort zone and find every single day an enjoyable one
They’re proud of the success of their programme over the last few years, having run two full day internship assessment days each year, but they do recruit all year long. Their internship day begins with a 2-month applicant attraction programme liaising with universities, advertising, social media engagement and Octopede referrals. They plan a full day with the support of colleagues at all levels that includes an overview of our agency by Jon, their CEO, group presentation tasks, individual tasks, speed interviewing and a creative project. The successful applicants are scored based on attitude, willing to go the extra mile, passion for the industry and Octopus Group and team work. Their values are centred on trust and support, pushing ourselves and challenging the norm so these key attributes really test if they’ll become a successful Octopede. Once appointed the successful Interns enjoy a full onboarding programme including induction sessions on PR and marketing, as well as overviews of the clients they will be working on and team sessions to help them settle in. They also have a HR, agency, office, and Brand to Sales overview in their first week to help them settle in and get acclimatised with the world of an Octopede. From day one their Interns don’t do pod tea rounds, they’re on client calls, attending meetings, speaking to journalists as well as having responsibility for specific tasks as part of their team. Interns soon realise no two days are the same and are quickly responsible for social media management, writing blogs, shadowing client calls, meeting preparation including agendas, follow-up, online.
